Bataan Free Trade Zone
Mariveles is the site of the Bataan Free Trade Zone (FTZ), which is host to subcontractors manufacturing clothing and shoes for major transnational corporations. Mariveles Port was established as a Foreign Trade Zone in 1969, then redefined as an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in 1995 [1]. It is, however, commonly referred to as the Bataan FTZ. The Bataan FTZ was the site of massive labor protests in the 1980s, as the mostly women workers facing low wages and immiserating working conditions in the factories challenged Philippine laws banning unions in the FTZ. Workers organized in secret and went on strike [2]. After the labor protests, many manufacturers moved out of the Bataan FTZ at Mariveles. Some have returned since then, as working conditions and labor relations have improved over time in the Bataan FTZ in comparison with some other FTZs in the Philippines.
Barangays
Mariveles is politically subdivided into 18 barangays.
