Marton, Middlesbrough

Marton is a small parish now within the Town of Middlesbrough in Cleveland, England. Captain James Cook was born here in 1728. Attractions include Stewart Park, a large, public nature reserve in which thrive several varieties of wild species, including the rabbit, bird, and squirrel. Stewart Park is also home to the Cook Birthplace Museum. In addition to viewing the large collection of Cook related objects at the museum, tourists interested in Cook can visit a granite urn erected in 1858 on the site of the demolished Cook cottage and St. Cuthbert's Church were Cook was baptized. The church is now ornamented with a stain glass window commemorating the great captain. Marton is near the North York Moors.
