Mastoid process

  1. The mastoid process (or mastoid bone) is a conical bump of the posterior portion of the temporal bone that is situated behind the ear in humans and many other vertebrates and serves as a site of neck muscle attachment (the Sternocleidomastoid, Splenius capitis, and Longissimus capitis).
  2. The part of the first branchial arch in an embryo that develops into the upper jaw.
