Megistotherium was a very large creodont that lived in the Miocene Epoch some 24 million years ago. With the mesonychid Andrewsarchus mongoliensis it is the largest terrestrial predatory mammal known. The animal was as large as a bison and it weighted over 900 kg. Its skull measures over metre in length. Megistotherium fossils have been discovered from Libya and Egypt. It may have been an active predator or a scavenger.
