A mid vowel is a vowel sound used in some spoken languages. The defining characteristic of a mid vowel is that the tongue is positioned mid-way between an open vowel and a close vowel. Mid vowels are commonly divided into two groups, the close-mid vowels like [e] and [o], and the open-mid vowels like [ɛ] and [ɔ]. Schwa ([ə]), a mid central vowel, is not generally considered to be either close-mid or open-mid.
