Mikan (蜜柑; みかん) is a Japanese variety of citrus fruit, in a family known to the west as a mandarin orange. It is similar to a tangerine with a particularly sweet juice and a loose skin that can be peeled easily. Mikan are in season during late fall and winter. They are grown throughout Japan but are especially famous in Kyushu. See for example amanatsu.
