Major Motoko Kusanagi (草薙素子 Kusanagi Motoko) is a fictional character in Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell anime and manga series. She is a cyborg in the employ of Public Security Section 9, a fictional divison of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission as the squad leader.
Prosthetics
The Major is a full cyborg, She underwent full cyberization when she was just a child. Her current body appears as a standard model, but in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex it is revealed that its internal specifications are top of the line, illegal for ordinary cyborgs. As a cyborg, the Major eats special food made for cybernetic organisms. There are no hidden weapons built into her body.
Stand Alone Complex
In the second season, it is revealed that the reason Motoko underwent full cyberization due to injuries resulted from a plane crash. Only she and a young boy survived the crash. She was in a coma until it became apparent she would die without undergoing cyberization. (Both of the children's parents died in the crash) (the boy is another main character in the second season series) Motoko, after receiving her first artifical body, encouraged the boy to undergo cyberization, but the boy rejected it because he wanted to continue to make paper cranes and the girl was unable to do so due to difficulty operating her cyborg body (until later). The girl left the boy to practice to be able to fold paper cranes.
