Mountains of Mourne
From Freepedia
The granite Mountains of Mourne are located in the first proposed national park of Northern Ireland. The area is an Area of Outstanding Beauty.
In the Irish language they are called Na Beanna Boirche
The mountains are located in County Down, near the town of Newcastle. The highest peak in the Mournes (and Northern Ireland) is Slieve Donard at 2,796 feet (852 metres). The famous Silent Valley Reservoir is located in the centre of the region. It lies in the valley between Slievenalogh and Slieve Binnian. The Mountains of Mourne are visited by many tourists, hill walkers, cyclists and rock climbers.
The Mourne Wall is a 22 mile (35 km) dry-stone wall crossing 15 summits, built by the Belfast Water Commissioners between 1910 and 1922 to enclose the water catchment area in the Mournes.
The mountains are the subject of a song by Percy French.
