From Freepedia

Wide area network (WAN) simulation is a technique where a program manipulates simulated entities such as hosts and routers in order to determine their behavior under various conditions. This is sometimes mistakenly known as network emulation. The most popular network simulator in research is ns and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, SunOS, Solaris and other operating systems. Another popular network simulator is QualNet.
