The North Shore Granny Murders was the name given to a series of murders of elderly females in Sydney's North Shore district from 1989 to 1990. The murders gained the name as all but one of the victims were aged 80 or over and most were living in the Sydney North Shore area. All victims were attacked with a blunt instrument in their own homes in broad daylight, sexually abused and strangled with their own underwear. John Wayne Glover was convicted of the murders.
The 1994 movie J'ai pas sommeil (I Can't Sleep), made by French director Claire Denis (Chocolat, No Fear No Die) was supposedly based upon Glover. In the movie, the "Granny Killer" is committing crimes in Paris instead of Sydney.
On the 8th of September 2005 he was found hanged in his Lithgow gaol cell and is believed to have commited suicide after battling cancer for several years. He was 72.
