The word octave derives from the Latin word octavus, meaning "eight." It has several usages:
- In music, an octave is the interval equivalent to an eighth.

- Less commonly, an octave is a distinct poetic form called the Sicilian octave.
- In the Roman Catholic Church, an octave is a feast commemorating the eighth day after a major holiday (which in the late Middle Ages grew to an eight day festival with a specific liturgy) particularly Easter and Pentecost.
