Porbandar

Porbandar is a town in the Gujarat state of India. Porbandar is also a district in the state of Gujarat.

City

This city is an important port located on the Arabian Sea on the west coast of the Indian subcontinent. It has a population of over 100,000. The town is best known for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. In the 10th century it was known as 'Pauravelakul' and then 'Sudamapuri' (After Sudama, friend of Lord Krishna). It is today a tourist centre and is served by an airport and train line. In addition it also has a deep sea port that was built over the last 25 years.

The name "Porbandar" came from the combination of two words, i.e., the famous goddess "Porai" and "Bandar" means Port.

This has inscription on all walls of Bhagavad-Gita. There are also the statues of Gods and Goddesses and also that of Mahatma_Gandhi etc. all carved out of stones on the pillars.

  • Rokhadia_hanuman temple

This is one of the older temples and situated at the outskirts of Porbandar. Rokhada in Gujarati language means money. It is said that people who visit this temple for darshan of God Hanuman will amass wealth.




District

This district was carved out of Junagadh district. It lies in the Kathiawar peninsula. Porbandar city is the administrative headquarters of this district. This district is surrounded by Jamnagar (North) and Junagadh (South) districts. To the west is the Arabian Sea.
