- 1946-1948: Enrico De Nicola (1877-1959) (Enrico De Nicola did not want to be called President of Italy, only Temporary Chief of State, as he had not been elected by the Republican Parliament that would to be first elected in 1948).
- 1948-1955: Luigi Einaudi (1874-1961)
- 1955-1962: Giovanni Gronchi (1887-1978)
- 1962-1964: Antonio Segni (1891-1972)
- 1964-1971: Giuseppe Saragat (1898-1988)
- 1971-1978: Giovanni Leone (1908-2001)
- 1978-1985: Sandro Pertini (1896-1990)
- 1985-1992: Francesco Cossiga (born 1928)
- 1992-1999: Oscar Luigi Scalfaro (born 1918)
- Since 1999: Carlo Azeglio Ciampi (born 1920)
