Pro Football Hall of Fame

From Freepedia

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is actually the National Football League's Hall of Fame. The building opened in Canton, Ohio, United States, on September 7, 1963, with 17 charter inductees. Through 2005, all but one of the inductees played some part of their pro career in the NFL. The lone exception is Buffalo Bills guard Billy Shaw, who played his entire career in the American Football League.

Inductees into the hall of fame are listed below. Each entry includes the year of induction and the span of time spent with the team. When a person significantly contributed to more than one club, he is listed repeatedly (e.g., George Blanda is listed with the Chicago Bears, Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) and Oakland Raiders).

Canton was primarily selected as the location for the Hall of Fame because:

  • The American Professional Football Association, which was later renamed to the National Football League, was founded in Canton.
  • The Canton Bulldogs was a successful NFL team during the first few years of the league.
  • The citizens of Canton successfully campaigned to have the Hall built in their city. [1]
