This article is about the term's most basic meaning; a purse is also a race track term. Purse is also a pronunciation for the surname Peirce.

A purse (also known as a handbag or pocketbook) is a small, often fashionably-designed bag used to hold items such as a wallet, keys, tissues, makeup, a hairbrush, pepper spray, and/or a gun, semi-automatic or otherwise.

Purses were carried by men in the Bible times over 2000 years ago(Mark 6:8 And [Jesus] commanded them that they should take nothing for [their] journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in [their] purse:).

Purses were apparently first developed in France in their modern form. They are usually carried by women, though men sometimes carry one as a smaller alternative to a backpack; such a purse is sometimes self-consciously termed a "murse" (a portmanteau for a "man purse").

Coin purses are small purses, just large enough to hold money and cards.

A medium-to-small-sized purse with no handle, designed to be carried (clutched) in one's hand is often called a clutch.

In the United Kingdom, a purse, specifically, is a money container similar to a wallet, but typically used by women and including a compartment for coins. The larger bag (which usually contains the purse) is called a handbag.
