Riel (Khmer: រៀល, Symbol ៛) is the national currency of Cambodia. It is used mainly for buying local produce and other merchandise. There were coins for 50, 100, 200, and 500 riels, but their value is so low that they are no longer in common circulation. Banknotes currently in circulation come in demominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 riels. Because of low prices in Cambodia, riel notes above 20,000 are uncommon.
The US Dollar, particularly single dollar banknotes, is widely used throughout Cambodia for virtually all purposes and is oftentimes preferred to the riel, earning it a reputation as the country's "unofficial second currency." The current exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Cambodian riel is rounded off at around 4,000 riels per one US Dollar (as of June 2005).
