Robinsons-May
From Freepedia
Robinsons-May is the current name used by a chain of department stores operating in the Southern California, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada, with headquarters in North Hollywood, California. It is currently a division of Federated Department Stores, having been acquired with Federated's takeover of May Department Stores on August 30 2005.
The double-barrelled Robinsons-May name was created in 1993 when the former middle-to-low-brow May Company California was consolidated with their carriage-trade corporate sibling J.W. Robinson's. May Department Stores had acquired Robinson's with its 1986 acquisition of Associated Dry Goods Corp and May Company California had been acquired back 1923 when May had acquired then then named A. Hamburger & Sons (founded in 1881 by Asher Hamburger). Both chain had operated exclusively in Southern California until 1989 when May Company had dissolved its Goldwaters division, based in Scottsdale, Arizona and apportioned its Phoenix metropolitan and Las Vegas, Nevadastores between the still separate Robinson's and May Company California. In 1997 Robinsons-May absorbed the Tucson area locations of sister division Foley's. Robinsons-May was further consolidated with Portland, Oregon-based Meier & Frank in 2002, which retained its nameplate, but merged its primary headquarters into Robinsons-May's.
By Fall 2006 the Robinsons-May name will be phased out as most of its locations convert to the Macy's nameplete. Fifteen of its California stores will be sold under agreement with the California State Attorney General. An additional overlapping store at Fiesta Mall in Phoenix, Arizona is for sale as well.
