Sørlandet
From Freepedia
Sørlandet is the geographical region (landsdel) of the Skagerrak coast of southern Norway.
The name, and modern concept of this part of the country considered as a separate region, was introduced as late as 1902 by the local author Wilhelm Krag. Before this, the area was considered part of Vestlandet.
Agder
Regarding Sørlandet as a region, it means the two counties Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder. The historical landscape of Agder coincides with this interpretation. In the early Viking Age, before Harald Fairhair, Agder was a petty kingdom.
Kings of Agder:
- Kissa
- Harald, father of Åsa, mother of Halfdan the Black
- Halfdan the Black, father of Harald Fairhair, from 838.
- Kjotve the Rich, late 800s
- Harald Gudrødsson Grenske, 976-987
The landscape
Regarded as a landscape, Sørlandet is restricted to the Skagerrak coastline proper, not including the inner valleys.
The coastal towns of Sørlandet, from west to east, are:
