Sampaloc district is a lively, middle-class, residential area in Manila City. The middle-class plebian University of Santo Tomas, the famous Dangwa flower market at Dimasalang Street.

"Sampaloc" is the native Tagalog dialect word for the "tamarind" fruit, perhaps because tamarind trees used to grow in this area of Manila in ancient times.

The Dangwa flower market is famous for selling cut flowers from all over the Philippines and is open 24 hours a day.
