Utility software or software utilities are the software programs that function like full application software but at a smaller "scale" or for a particular purpose. Utility software has long been integrated in most major operating systems. Windows Explorer in the MS Windows operating systems is one example of utility software. The Windows Explorer program allows a user to easily view and manage all of files and folders on the system on Microsoft Windows.

Examples

  • Disk Defragmenter (joins pieces) is a small but essential program that allows a user to gather up all the pieces of files that have been stored in a scattered array on a hard drive and join them together in one efficient piece.
  • Disk Cleanup (Debugger) is small but critical program that allows a user to quickly determine which file(s) on the hard drive are no longer useful, corrupted in some way, or were not correctly saved and eliminate them for a more efficiently operating hard drive.
  • backup program which makes a copy of an entire computer system. This is essential in the event of a hard disk crash.
  • restore program which restore data files, selectivly or may be able to return the computer to its original state.
