Colonel Roy Campbell (formerly romanized Roy Kyanbel) is a fictional character appearing in the Metal Gear video game series.
An American who served as FOXHOUND's executive officer during the Big Boss days up until the Outer Heaven crisis, under the codename of "Chicken Fox". Prior to joining FOXHOUND, he served the USMC, the U.S. 5th Marine Division in Vietnam, Delta Force and the Green Berets.
After Big Boss turned renegade, Campbell was appointed as commander of FOXHOUND and began revising FOXHOUND's methods with his personal touch. He discarded the codename system and adopted the use of high-tech equipment such as radars and spy satellites.
He was the one who brought out former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake during the Zanzibar Land uprising and served as his commanding officer during Operation: Intrude F014 in 1999. With his supervision, Snake was able to defeat the forces of Zanzibar Land and retrieve the OILIX formula.
In the following year, Campbell retired as FOXHOUND commander for undisclosed reasons, although it is believed he was unhappy with the direction the unit was taken. In 2005, Campbell was called back to action by the US Government during the Shadow Moses takeover, when FOXHOUND (now led by Liquid Snake), took over a nuclear disposal facility and held several people hostages, including Campbell's niece, Meryl, who was assigned to the disposal facility on the day of the takeover. Campbell once again brought Snake out of retirement to neutralize the new FOXHOUND. However, during the course of the mission, Campbell was forced to keep a lot of secrets from Snake, including the true purpose of his mission and his injection with FOXDIE. Eventually, Campbell revealed the truth at the end of the mission and tried to call off an air strike directed to the base, but was briefly arrested by Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman. However, after Snake defeated Liquid, Campbell was exonerated from charges, as blame was laid on the secretary of defense instead.
After the events of Shadow Moses incident, Campbell continued with his retirement.
Miscellaneous info and other appearances
In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, a character known simply as "Colonel" bearing Campbell's likeness appears as Raiden's commanding officer through the CODEC. The character is never identified by name, except for a name tag with Campbell's name, although Raiden confirms that it is supposed to be the same Colonel Campbell from Metal Gear Solid, when he makes references to Shadow Moses. It is revealed near the end of the game, that the Colonel is not an actual person, but an elaborated A.I. constructed by GW and based on Raiden's perception of the real Colonel Campbell.
The actual Campbell also appeared in the non-canonical Metal Gear spinoff, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, as well in the Metal Gear Solid Drama CD series, where he was the main focus in the second volume. He also had a humorous cameo appearance in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, where he explains the objective of the "Snake vs. Ape" mini-game and derides Snake if he kills someone who becomes important in the earlier games, such as Ocelot, claiming that Snake has created a "time paradox".
In the alternate "Meryl dies" ending of Metal Gear Solid, it is revealed that Roy Campbell is the actual biological father of Meryl and not her uncle, as it was previously believed. This fact is further supported by Confidential Legacy, a non-canonical Snake Tales mission in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.
According to Confidential Legacy, Roy's younger brother is named Matt Campbell.
Sometimes, the Campbell look in the original Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is referred to as "Chinese Campbell" by some fans as he looks somewhat like a Chinese person. In reality, his facial features were based on Richard Crenna who played Colonel Samuel Trautman in the Rambo series. Campbell also shares many personality characteristics with Trautman.

Master Miller (real name McDonell Benedict Miller) is a fictional character in the Metal Gear video game series.
Master Miller was born in the United States 60 years after his grandparents immigrated there from Japan (he is half-Japanese). He served as a survival master in SAS (Special Air Service, a special operations group, of Britain), The Green Beret Squad, US Marine boot camp, and most recently also FOXHOUND. He is also volunteered as a coach in MERC SCHOOL (Mercenary School) twice a year but since retired. When he served as a drill sergeant in the FOXHOUND, he was referred to as a "Hell Master" and draftees called him "Master Miller" with the utmost respect.
Solid Snake probably met him while in FOXHOUND's boot camp. He divorced his first wife (Nadine), and resided in Los Angeles with his daughter (Catherine) while serving as an adviser for FOXHOUND during Roy Campbell's days in the unit. After the Uprising of Zanzibar and Colonel Campbell's retirement, Miller retired as well and moved to Alaska. He sometimes trained the Alaskan scouts during his free time. However, three or more days before the terrorist takeover of Shadow Moses, Master was attacked and murdered in his home. Liquid Snake, the terrorist leader, then assumed Master's identity and posed as him during Snake's mission on Shadow Moses Island.

Dr. Hal Emmerich, nicknamed Otacon, is a fictional character in the Metal Gear Solid video game series.
A master engineer and the eccentric designer of Metal Gear REX, Otacon becomes a close ally of Solid Snake once he learns of REX's nuclear strike capabilities. After the events of Metal Gear Solid, he helps form the Philanthropy group with Solid Snake to stop the proliferation of Metal Gear-type weapons.
A devoted fan of anime, Hal's chosen nickname is the short form of Otaku Convention, a reference to the real Otakon held in Baltimore each year. The name "Hal" is a direct reference to the computer HAL 9000 from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of several references to that film present in Metal Gear Solid. The surname "Emmerich" comes from Roland Emmerich, who is one of Hideo Kojima's favorite film directors.
After the death of Hal's mother, his father married a British woman named Julie Danziger with a child of her own (Emma). Hal and Emma became very close, and developed a mutual infatuation. Shortly afterwards, his stepmother seduced him, and they held a brief affair.
When Hal's father learned of this, he committed suicide by drowning himself, but accidentally dragged in Emma, too. Emma expected her brother to save her, but he didn't know it was happening as he was with his stepmother at the time. Because of this, Emma has always claimed to have hated her brother.
Shortly afterwards, Hal ran away from home and didn't see any of his family members until several years later. Choosing not to continue with school, he instead began to educate himself via the Internet. He became a big fan of anime, and started calling himself Otacon, short for the Otaku Convention, which he never misses.
Eventually, Otacon was hired by Armstech, Inc. to be the lead engineer for the Metal Gear REX project. He jumped at the chance to make an actual mecha type robot, which appear frequently in the anime he enjoyed. He was led to believe that it was a mobile defense system, but in reality it was a nuclear doomsday weapon. During the Shadow Moses rebellion of Metal Gear Solid, Otacon encountered Solid Snake, who informed him of the true nature of his creation. Devastated, Otacon realized that he had written yet another chapter in his family's dark history: his grandfather had worked on the Manhattan Project, and his father was born on August 6, 1945, the day of the Hiroshima bombing.
During this time, Otacon had developed a strong attraction to FOXHOUND member Sniper Wolf, possibly under the effects of Stockholm syndrome. Distraught that Snake would have to kill her, Otacon eventually came to terms with her, himself, and his position in life.
With Otacon's assistance, Snake was able to destroy Metal Gear REX and defeat the terrorist uprising. After the schematics to Metal Gear were placed on the black market by Revolver Ocelot, both men formed Philanthropy, an organization dedicated to the end of the proliferation of Metal Gear-type weapons.
Otacon was forced to fake his death after being framed by The Patriots in the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but came out of hiding after he learned that Emma, his sister, was working for them, because she resents Hal for not helping her during the incident at the pool. He managed to get her to change her ways, but she died shortly afterwards, due to stab wounds inflicted by Vamp. Before she died, Emma admitted to always admiring Hal and wanting to follow in his footsteps. Despite falling into deep despair, Snake encouraged him to move on and rescue all the hostages held in the Big Shell. Apparently he was successful in this, and stays in contact to support Raiden until he defeated Solidus.
When Snake met back with Otacon (supposedly at their hideout) he was given the disk that contained the data of The Patriots to look over, which included names and whereabouts. After this (The ending note) Otacon told Solid Snake about The Patriots information on the disc. It told that The Patriots had been dead for more than 100 years...Otacon's current whereabouts are unknown, but it is assumed that he's still trying to unravel more the mystery of The Patriots while still working with Snake in Philanthropy.
In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, it is revealed that in the 1960s, Otacon's grandfather (or father) was a friend of Soviet engineer Aleksandr Leonivitch Granin, the man who first developed the concept of bipedial tanks as weapons. Otacon's father or grandfather wrote papers on the subjects, and it's possible that Otacon himself based REX off these early designs. It is also possible that ArmsTech had been given Granin's REX-like designs and Otacon modernized them for the actual REX, with no knowledge of Granin's connection to his grand/father (as the very end of Metal Gear Solid 3 implies that Granin never got to send the designs off to Otacon's grand/father as Revolver Ocelot, talking to the CIA Director, implies that he found the designs and that they could be used for a future American weapon).
Otacon will appear in the upcoming fourth installment Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Appearing to be several years older then he was in MGS2, Otacon directly helps Snake through the use of a small, remotely controlled robot similar in appearance and function to the Metal Gear Mk. 2 featured in Hideo Kojima's earlier title Snatcher. Otacon's age and apperance in the upcoming game has been used to contrast Snake's apperance, which is MUCH older.

Revolver Ocelot (also referred to as Shalashaska and Ocelot) is a fictional character who originates in the Metal Gear video game series.
Ocelot specialises in military gunplay and interrogation. He is an ex-Russian Spetsnaz soldier who served during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It was during this time that he became infamous amongst the mujahadeen as a sadist for which they christened him Shalashaska (a Russian slang word for "prison").
In Metal Gear Solid he was 182 cm tall.
Distinguishing features and behaviour
Ocelot is described as being obsessed with guns, cowboy films and spaghetti Westerns. This is reflected in his choice of dress as well as his codename and the weapons he uses - he is armed with two, or sometimes three Colt Single Action Army revolvers, which he wields with almost superhuman skill, being both a master of ricochet and fancy gun-twirling techniques; by the time of Metal Gear Solid 2, he seems to have attained the uncanny ability to draw his weapon and shoot any target in the heart in a split second. He also uses a technique known as 'fanning', in which one hand holds the revolver and the other hits the revolver hammer repeatedly, allowing for rapid fire. He was inspired to use revolvers after his first meeting with Big Boss when they fought each other. Big Boss, who was under codename "Naked Snake", watched Ocelot wield a Makarov and said his technique would be better suited for a revolver. The next time Ocelot and Snake met, Ocelot had an engraved version of the Colt Single Action Army. He was somewhat insulted when Big Boss told him the engraving had no tactical advantage. Afterwards he finally settled on regular Single Action Armys, which he currently uses. During Shadow Moses, after Snake confronts Vulcan Raven in a battletank, Raven calls Ocelot General Ivan (likely a simple ethnic slur towards Ocelot's Russian affiliation).
History
Chronologically, Ocelot first appears in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in his younger years (age 20). He is part of GRU and is a major in Spetsnaz's Ocelot unit, although in reality he is a double agent working for the CIA and a former NSA codebreaker; ultimately, he answers to "The Patriots". He is born after his mother was shot during the invasion of Normandy, June 6th, 1944. Some hidden dialouge in Snake Eater, along with an interview with Hideo Kojima himself, shows that Ocelot is the son of The Boss and The Sorrow - the latter whose powers as a spiritual medium would explain Ocelot's almost supernatural relationship with the arm of Liquid Snake. Supporting this evidence is Ocelot's age, which would put his birth around D-Day - the date of which Boss tells Jack her child was born (the same child who was later taken away by the Philosophers).
At the end of their confrontation on the WIG aircraft at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3, Naked Snake told Ocelot that his real name was John (which may either be a reference to the John Doe everyman, or it may in fact be his real name, with Jack being an American nickname for John). Ocelot tells Snake that his real name is Adamska, although it is impossible to know if he is telling the truth, as ADAMska might simply be a pun of Ocelot's for his CIA codename (ADAM).
Many years later, in Metal Gear Solid (age 60-not-yet-61) he is a member of High-Tech Special Forces Unit FOX-HOUND, an elite special forces group which at that time is composed of former mercenaries. During FOX-HOUND's attempted "revolution" using a new nuclear weapons system, he loses his right arm below the elbow to Gray Fox. Afterwards it is revealed that Ocelot had been secretly working for the then-President of the United States, Solidus Snake. Ocelot then receives a partial arm transplant performed in Lyon, France. The operation is paid for by Solidus Snake, and the arm belongs to Liquid Snake, who died of FOXDIE in Metal Gear Solid.
Ocelot resurfaces in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (age 63 at Tanker, 64-not-yet-65 at Big Shell), stealing a sophisticated "Metal Gear hunter" system developed by the US Marines while claiming to be "taking it back" to its rightful owners. At this point Liquid takes over Ocelot's mind and body via the arm. Ocelot is seen using injections of some sort to suppress the manifestations. However, the true nature of the manifestations is made further unclear as it is implied in a conversation with Solidus that it only occurs when Solid Snake is near.
During the events of MGS2, Ocelot apparently aids Solidus Snake in fighting the mysterious Patriots, a group Solidus believes is running a simulation intended to prove that, given the right circumstances, any soldier can become as skilled as the legendary Solid Snake. Once again, however, he double-crosses his comrades, revealing that he is working with the Patriots. The sinister group has stage-managed the events of Solidus' action with precision; Ocelot's final role is to finish off the remaining "evidence", namely Solidus, Solid Snake, Raiden, and Fortune. However, Liquid takes over Ocelot's body again, and steals Metal Gear RAY with the intention of using it to destroy the Patriots. But as it may turn out, his effort will be in vain as even Ocelot's knowledge of their location is quite possibly false.
It has been explicitly mentioned and shown that he'll be making another physical appearance in the upcoming fourth installment: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Often gamers complain that Ocelot's motives and actions are difficult to follow, but one thing must be remembered: his only loyalty has been to the American Philosophers, who later became the Patriots. He knows and obeys their commands, despite the role he may be playing at the time.
Johnny Sasaki
Johnny Sasaki is a recurring joke character, first appearing in Metal Gear Solid but later appearing in Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. He serves as a comic relief, as he is a coward and diarrhetic who ends up in embarassing situations.
He was named after Hideki Sasaki, the character model designer of the Metal Gear Solid series, who had a habit of purposely disorganizing his desk to make himself look busy according to the rest of the staff.
In Metal Gear Solid, he's the guard that Meryl knocks him out and strips him when she needs a disguise, and in Metal Gear Solid 2 he can be spotted in a bathroom stall, complaining about his commanding officer, Olga. He can also be heard behind a pilar on the Strut L Oil Fence. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, his father, also named Johnny, guards Snake's cell, and can be heard to complain of his diarrhea. Johnny tells Big Boss that all first children born in his family is named Johnny.

Decoy Octopus is a member of FOXHOUND, and, with the rest of his unit, went rogue during Metal Gear Solid. He has an almost preternatural skill with disguises, as his name might imply, and is able to nearly perfectly take on the appearance and personality of his assigned target, using techniques never explained in the games.
He has a minor role in Metal Gear Solid, imitating the DARPA Chief. He was killed by the FOXDIE virus that had been implanted on Solid Snake. The FOXDIE virus was programmed to kill all the FOXHOUND members, therefore it killed him.
Jim Houseman
Jim Houseman is a fictional character appearing in the video game Metal Gear Solid.
Jim Houseman was the Secretary of Defense during the presidency of George Sears (Solidus Snake) (which would put him in the place of Donald Rumsfeld during the current Bush administration).
Houseman had operational control of Solid Snake's mission at Shadow Moses Island. After Snake took on Liquid on top of the wrecked Metal Gear REX, Houseman called Snake on his CODEC and told him things like he was an embarrasment from the 70's, and that he ordered a nuclear strike on the island in order to hide the evidence about the existence of Metal Gear itself, and the Genome Army. He placed under arrest Colonel Roy Campbell, and established that he wasn't acting under the president orders, which would turn out to be a lie, considering that all events regarding Shadow Moses, were some kind of a "rebellion" from Solidus to The Patriots. He reveals the truth about Decoy Octopus's death (saying that Donald Anderson, the DARPA Chief was Housman's personal friend and he was not included in the FOXDIE program). After this, Campbell manages to regain control of the mission and stops the order given by Houseman to nuke the island. Snake requests Mei Ling to print a copy of every conversation held up till then by CODEC, which would mean their safety. In the bonus feature included in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, "In the darkness of Shadow Moses", written by Nastasha Romanenko, says that after the incident, Houseman was forced to leave his position in government, and later on he commited suicide. Of course, it was The Patriots who killed him, and they were planning on doing the same with Solidus (who also had to quit presidency), but he went underground with the help of Revolver Ocelot before The Patriots could accomplish the assassination.
Naomi Hunter

In Metal Gear Solid, Naomi Hunter is the head of FOXHOUND's medical staff, and part of the support crew assembled to assist Solid Snake during the Shadow Moses Island incident (the events of Metal Gear Solid) in 2005. During the course of the game, she provides the player (as Snake) with information about FOXHOUND members.
She has a doctoral degree in genetics and was employed by ATGC Inc. at California's Biotech Bay Area, where she worked on the company's Gene Therapy and Gene Strengthening experiments funded by the Department of Defense, resulting in the creation of the Genome Soldiers. She took over as FOXHOUND's chief genetist after the sudden death of her predecessor, Dr. Clark in 2003. She is over 165cm tall and has a brown skin complexion. She is well-liked among her staff and is referred as "Dr. Naomi", isntead of the more formal "Dr. Hunter".
However, much of Naomi's background and personal history is revealed to had been purchased or fabricated in order to acquired her position. Naomi was actually born in Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Civil War sometime in the early 1980's. She was orphaned during the war and adopted by a young soldier named Frank Jaeger (future FOXHOUND member, Gray Fox), who found Naomi at the Zambezi River and took care of her as his little sister (although years later, Fox admitted to Snake that he was responsible for the deaths of Naomi's parents and that he adopted her out of personal guilt). Naomi and Frank lived together in Mozambique until Big Boss (Frank's benefactor) took them with him to the United States. Frank raised Naomi there and took her through school. However, Frank was forced to leave Naomi in the US, while he returned to FOXHOUND for duty. She did not hear about Fox until years later, when he was fatally wounded in combat by Solid Snake at Zanzibar Land.
Seeking to avenge her brother, Naomi bought her identity and changed her surname to "Hunter", after her brother's ("Hunter" being the English meaning of the Germanic name "Jaeger"). She studied genetics and joined FOXHOUND, believing that it would provide her with the perfect opportunity for revenge. While working on her gene therapy projects, Naomi completed the development of FOXDIE virus for the DOD that was initially overseen by Richard Ames. She also covered Dr.Clark's death at the hands of Gray Fox after he escaped and burned down his laboratory.
Prior to Solid Snake's mission at Shadow Moses Island, Snake became acquainted with Naomi within the U.S.S. Discovery, as she was one of support crew assigned to Snake during the operation. She injected Snake with the FOXDIE under the guise of an anti-freezing peptide. During the mission, Snake became better acquainted with each other through the CODEC, getting to know him personally. When Snake was imprisoned by the enemy at some point during his mission, Naomi related parts of her actual past and personal experiences to Snake, without divulging her actual identity.
However, when she faced with the accusations of treason (brought upon by Liquid Snake, while disguised as Master Miller), Naomi was forced to reveal the whole true, including her relationship with Gray Fox, her motives and Snake's infection with FOXDIE. She revealed that it was not her decision to inject Snake with FOXDIE, but rather was part of Snake's operation all along.
Prior to injection though, Naomi altered the FOXDIE program. Originally scheduled to kill Snake after completing his mission, instead the incubation period was changed to a wildcard value, leaving Snake vulnerable at any moment. Liquid Snake, who was identical to Snake in the genetic level, was killed by the virus after coming in contact with Solid Snake.
After the incident, Naomi was placed formally under arrest and charged with treason. However, three weeks after her arrest, she escaped custody while undergoing debriefing at an undisclosed facility. It is hinted that Solid Snake himself might had been responsible for her escape.

Liquid Snake is the primary antagonist in Metal Gear Solid. He is Solid Snake's doppelganger and archnemesis, and also the field commander of FOXHOUND and the Genome Army during the events of that game. He is over 183cm tall, has an IQ of 180 and speaks seven languages (including Spanish, Arabic, French and Malay) fluently. He is an exact duplicate of Solid Snake in terms of appearances, with the only distinguishable feature being his darker skin tone and different hairstyle.
Along with Solid Snake and Solidus, he is one of the three "brothers" genetically engineered from cell samples taken from Big Boss in the Les Enfants Terribles project, and (wrongly) believes himself to be inferior to Solid Snake, as the recipient of all of Big Boss's inferior recessive genes. (In Metal Gear Solid's epilogue, this belief is revealed to be incorrect: Revolver Ocelot reveals that Liquid is, in fact, the recipient of the stronger dominant genetic traits posessed by Big Boss, with Solid Snake receiving the inferior recessive genes.) As a result, he holds a strong resentment towards Solid Snake and wishes to defeat him in combat and reclaim his "birthright".
Liquid was raised in the UK shortly after birth and served the Special Air Service during the Gulf War in Iraq, where he was assigned to track down and destroy mobile SCUD missiles. In truth, he infiltrated the Middle East as a sleeper agent for the British SIS, but was taken prisoner by Iraqi forces and held captive as POW until 1994, when he was rescued by the US Government.
Liquid Snake joins FOXHOUND in 2000 (after Snake and Campbell had already left the unit) and becomes field commander of the unit. He leads FOXHOUND as they seize Shadow Moses Island and the Metal Gear REX and takes the DARPA Chief and ArmsTech President as hostages. He demands Big Boss' corpse in order to procure a cure for the genetic defects of the Genome Army and himself.
During course of Solid Snake's mission, he is confronted by Liquid on several occasions. Initially, Liquid Snake attacks Solid Snake from a Hind D attack helicopter, but retreats when his helicopter is crippled by Solid Snake's missile fire).
The entire final act of Metal Gear Solid, too, is a series of battles between Solid and Liquid Snake. First, Liquid Snake pilots the Metal Gear REX and attacks Solid Snake, but, with the help of Gray Fox (in the guise of Cyborg Ninja), Solid Snake destroys the Metal Gear. Then, Liquid and Solid Snake battle bare-handed atop the ruins of the Metal Gear, attempting to fling each other from the top of the ruined mecha to the ground far below. While it seems Solid Snake is victorious in this struggle, Liquid Snake, manning a machine-gun-armed military jeep, pursues him as he tries to escape from the self-destructing Shadow Moses facility. Ultimately, Liquid Snake dies from the genetically-engineered FOXDIE virus, just outside the facility.
His influence does not stop with his death, however. In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, he manages to take control of former ally Revolver Ocelot, via an arm transplant conducted in Lyon, France (How Ocelot came to be in possession of Liquid Snake's arm is not explained). Liquid's personality would often take over Ocelot's mind whenever Snake was in close proximity.
After his death, Solid Snake and Otacon acquired Liquid Snake's body from the organization and used it to make people think Solid Snake died on the tanker which carried Metal Gear RAY.
Mei Ling

| Mei Ling | |
| Aliases | None |
| Real Name | Mei Ling |
| Nationality | Chinese-American |
| Affiliations | MIT, PHILANTHROPY. |
| Gender | Female |
| Voice Actor (English) | Kim Mai Guest |
| Voice Actor (Japanese) | Houko Kuwashima |
| Motion Actor | Megumi Kori (Photoshoot) |
Mei Ling is a fictional character appearing in the Metal Gear series of video games, after being first introduced in Metal Gear Solid.
In the original Metal Gear Solid, Mei Ling serves as an engineer and data processing specialist, recording the information of Solid Snake's adventures. She designed the Codec and soliton radar he uses, and often dispenses friendly advice in the form of proverbs and quotations. It is notable that she uses only Chinese proverbs in the Japanese version, but the English version was rewritten to include sources more likely to be familiar to a western audience (such as Shakespeare).
In the Japanese, Mei Ling is voiced by Houko Kuwashima. In English, she is voiced by Kim Mai Guest (also credited as Kim Nguyen). In the original Metal Gear Solid, Mei Ling had a distinct asian accent, but in the remake (Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes) she loses the accent completely.
According to character designer Yoji Shinkawa, she was modeled after the likeness of actress Shinobu Nakayama.
Mei Ling's primary function is to save the player's data. However, towards the end of the first Metal Gear Solid game she helps identify Master Miller's true identity as Liquid Snake by noticing that Miller's signal came from inside the base at Shadow Moses Island. After Liquid Snake finally dies, she examines satellite photographs to locate a nearby snowmobile for Snake and his companion (who will change depending on actions taken at a certain point in the game) to exit with. She also makes a hard copy of all the data to counteract an ensuing conspiracy.
In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty she is part of Philanthropy, an anti-Metal Gear organization. While her other functions at this organization (if any) are unknown, she secretly and illegally appropriates equipment from the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center. If the player calls Otacon's save frequency enough times, the player will get to hear from Mei Ling correcting Otacon after misquoting too many proverbs.
In Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions she is one subject (as is Naomi Hunter) in the "Photoshoot Mode". Mei Ling is also a focal character in the Japan-only Metal Gear Solid Drama CD series. She appears in the non-canonical Game Boy Color game, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel.

Psycho Mantis is a fictional character and boss in the game Metal Gear Solid. His real name is unknown, although he is also known as The Dream Robber. In the game, he has been affiliated with FOXHOUND, with mention of past history in the KGB and the FBI. His special abilities include the psychic powers of telekinesis and telepathy. He is 190 cm tall.
History
Psycho Mantis was born in a small Russian village before the collapse of the Soviet Union. His mother died giving birth to him, which made his father resent and hate him. He discovered his father's true emotions one day while accidentally reading his mind. He wondered if his father would kill him, and the shock of this revelation awoke his sub conscious, and inadvertently caused the deaths of everyone in the village (approx. 1,000 people). This release of psychic energy caused severe burns across his body, particularly his face.
The official cause of death for the people of the village was found to be brain hemorrhaging and he was then taken into custody by the KGB, who found his psychic powers impressive. He was taught to control his abilities in a boarding school owned by Soviet Intelligence, along with other possibly psychic children.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Mantis was drafted as a psychic profiler by the FBI. He moved to the United States and began to work immediately for the FBI. He would enter the minds of a suspected killer and uncover the truth about their crimes. He eventually delved too far into the mind of a serial killer, and the killer's thoughts infected his mind, driving him insane. This created a violent multiple personality called the parasite.
The parasite caused Mantis to go into killing rages, but he found he could use his mental abilities to control his alternate personality. This greatly reduced his psychic abilities, so after he was recruited by FOXHOUND, he let the parasite roam free in his mind, allotting him even greater psychic ability.
By this time he had taken to wearing a gas mask, partially to hide his deformed facial features, but also to prevent the thoughts of others from entering his mind involuntarily.
In the current incarnation of FOXHOUND, its members (Liquid Snake, Vulcan Raven, Revolver Ocelot, Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf, and Decoy Octopus) grew tired of their roles as puppets to the government, and attacked Shadow Moses Island, a nuclear disposal facility. Psycho Mantis used his powers to gather the aid of the Genome Army, a group of genetically enhanced soldiers.
This is the point where the game Metal Gear Solid takes place.
During the course of that game, Mantis attempts to stop Solid Snake's progress, at first taking control of Meryl Silverburgh, then revealing himself. Psycho Mantis is ultimately defeated by Snake, and tells Snake of his past before revealing the route ahead in his dying moments. He remarks that it is the first time he has used his powers for good, and that it felt "nostalgic" (in the English original translation of the game, "kind of nice").
Gameplay
When Solid Snake faces Mantis, Mantis demonstrates his psychic powers by breaking the fourth wall. In the pre-battle cut-scene, he activates the controller's rumble feature, then reads the player's memory card. Then, at the begining of the actual battle, Mantis yells "Blackout!" and causes the screen to go completely black except for the words Hideo (a reference to the director Hideo Kojima) in green all capital text in the top right corner of the screen, much like TV or VCR on-screen-displays. Many players mistook this to be a glitch in the game, while it was supposed to trick the player into thinking that he or someone else changed the TV or VCR input, as a slight attempt to throw the player off.
In the original PlayStation game, he reads off the titles of Konami's other games (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Suikoden among others), while in the remake Twin Snakes, he reads Nintendo's games (Super Smash Bros. Melee and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, among others). In the Japanese versions, if the player has save data from Snatcher and Policenauts, they will receive a special message from Hideo Kojima.
The easiest way to defeat Psycho Mantis is to for the player to remove the memory card (re-insert STRAIGHT after battle), plug the controller into the Player Two portal (which prevents The Parasite from predicting your battle moves) and equip both the FA-MAS and the Thermal Goggles (FA-MAS is useful for attacking Mantis with speed and power, while the Thermal Goggles prevent him from turning invisible on Snake [by detecting his body heat] and making Mantis unable to hide from your attacks). The battle should be a lot easier now, if not impossible to lose (on easier difficulties). Occasionally, Psycho Mantis takes control of Meryl Silverburgh, in which case the player should not shoot her, but instead punch and kick her enough to knock her out.
Psycho Mantis was ultimately defeated by Solid Snake.

In Metal Gear Solid, Nastasha Romanenko is Solid Snake's codec contact on matters related to nuclear weapons. She was brought into the mission by Richard Ames, her ex-husband.
Nastasha Romanenko is a strong advocate of nuclear abolishment. Nastasha was born in the Ukraine in the town of Prypiat, three kilometers north of the Chernobyl power plant. She and her family were showered by radiation after the nuclear plant disaster in Chernobyl on April 26, 1986. She was evacuated to another location after the disaster. Natasha was later found to be infertile from radiation poisoning that gave her problems with her thyroid gland. In 1990, Nastasha’s parents were killed when they were exposed to lethal amounts of radiation while helping in the clean-up. Nastasha then moved to the United States. In 1992, she joined the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) where she met Richard Ames. The two soon married. The marriage, however, did not last long and the two divorced soon after. Natasha did not see Ames for many years after that.
After Natasha's divorce, she left the DIA and became a freelance military analysist. During this time she wrote for several different magazines as a journalist. In 1996, Nastasha attended the Canberra, the world's first nationally hosted nuclear weapon abolition proposal committee. After the Chernobyl disaster, Natasha had vowed to free the world from nuclear weapons. After that, Natasha joined NEST (Nuclear Emergency Search Team) as a military and nuclear analysist.
In 2005, Nastasha came into contact with her ex-husband, Richard Ames and "asked" to help with the Shadow Moses mission as a nuclear analysist. She helped Snake by giving him information on his weapons and equipment, as well as the nuclear warheads in storage and such. At the mission's end, Richard gave Nastasha a data disc containing information about FoxDie and helped her escape before she was silenced for participating in the operation. She never saw Ames again after that. Nastasha then went into hiding for some time. Her current whereabouts are unknown, she is probably still in hiding
After the events of Metal Gear Solid, she writes a (fictional) book titled In the Darkness of Shadow Moses: The Unofficial Truth. This fictional book serves as a plot summary of Metal Gear Solid (and actually reveals alot more than that of what was in the game), and is included in print form with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and in electronic form in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.

In Metal Gear Solid, Sniper Wolf is the sniper of the FOXHOUND unit, and she goes rogue with the rest of her unit during the events of that game. She is the unit's sniper, a role in which she is exceptionally skilled.
She was a Kurdish member of FOXHOUND and a famed sniper capable of going without food and staying still for up to a week. She typically formed an emotional connection with her targets before killing them with her favoured weapon, the Heckler & Koch PSG-1, and used mercury bullets to poison the victims as well. She also had an addiction to diazepam, a drug that relieves anxiety and stops muscle spasms.
She is 176 cm tall.
Being a Kurd, she was treated quite poorly. At the age of five, near the end of the Iran-Iraq War in 1988, she witnessed the death of her family and thousands of others as they died to a gas attack by Saddam Hussein's troops. She was then taken as an orphan to the Iraqi Ministry of Internal Affairs, where she received brainwashing and training as a sniper. She was trained by a Gurkha in Nepal, who was one of the world's most accurate snipers.
In 1991, during a battle within Iraq after the Gulf War, she was able to flee to a Kurdish refugee camp, where Big Boss and the US Secretary of State was visiting. Big Boss noticed her extroardinary abilities and brought her back to the US, where she received counselling and deprogramming to destroy her Iraqi brainwashing, leaving only her fighting abilities with her. Extremely grateful, she thought of Big Boss as Saladin (who defeated the Crusaders in the 12th century) and followed him in whatever he did until his death by Solid Snake. At this point, Liquid Snake was able to find her and convince her to join FOXHOUND.
During the Shadow Moses Island incident, she cared for the huskies that Liquid Snake intended to kill as she enjoyed their company. She was also impressed with Otacon giving his scarce food supply to the huskies, and may have developed the Lima Effect (in which the captor becomes concerned to a hostage). Otacon, possibly under Stockholm syndrome, admitted to her that he loved her just before she died from the injuries Solid Snake had inflicted on her during their battle. She requested that Snake shoot her to relieve the pain, which he did after some hesitation and protests from Otacon.

Vulcan Raven (real name unknown) is a fictional character from the video game Metal Gear Solid.
Vulcan Raven was born to Alaskan Indian and Eskimo parents, though he hates the word “Eskimo” used by white men. He had a large tattoo like raven birthmark across his forehead, and so he was raised as a shaman by his people (Eskimos and Inuits worship the raven as the creator).
He graduated from the University of Alaska, and spent a few more years living in his homeland. He took part in the Eskimo-Indian Olympics, and won many “Ear Pull” contests (an event where two opponents pull each other's ear while enduring the harsh cold, intended to test both spiritual and physical strength).
One extremely cold winter, he decided to walk across the frozen Bering Sea, and managed to reach Russia. He joined the Russian Spetsnaz, where he met Revolver Ocelot and Sergei Gurlukovich. After the fall of the Soviet Union he was demoted for a failed coup attempt by dissident government leaders. He decided that he would not stay after this, and left Russia to become a mercenary for hire.
Years later he joined Outer Heaven on the recommendations of Revolver Ocelot. The destruction of Outer Heaven was Solid Snake's first mission, but Raven and Snake did not meet on this occasion. With Outer Heaven in ruins, Raven returned to being a mercenary until, once again on the recommendations of Revolver Ocelot, he joined FOXHOUND.
During his FOXHOUND years he took a M61 Vulcan cannon (a machine gun usually mounted on F-16's.) as his weapon of choice, and carried a huge barrel of ammunition on his back. He is 210 cm tall.
The most recent incarnation of FOXHOUND (Liquid Snake, Vulcan Raven, Revolver Ocelot, Psycho Mantis, Sniper Wolf and Decoy Octopus) grew tired of their roles as puppets to the government, and attacked Shadow Moses Island, a nuclear disposal facility. This is the point where the game Metal Gear Solid takes place.
During the course of Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake (the player's character) encounters Vulcan Raven twice: once while Raven is piloting an M1 Abrams tank, and once inside a freezing cold warehouse. During the latter instance, Snake defeated Raven. In his final moments, Raven offered Snake a 'hint', telling him that the DARPA chief whom Snake had met had in fact been Decoy Octopus. He did not explain why or how he was killed, or why he was disguised in the first place, but declared that Snake would always follow a life of bloodshed wherever he went.
As he made this declaration, he was being eaten alive by his own ravens so that he could be "one with them."
Raven has displayed many abilities similar to magic, as he can control his ravens during the battle to attack Snake.
Minor Appeareances
In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty the player can find an action figure of Raven in the Tanker Chapter as Snake. This brings up a conversation with Otacon about Raven. You can also find one floating in the water during the section in the Plant Chapter where Raiden goes to the flooded section of the Shell 2 Core to rescue Emma Emmerich.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Richard Ames
Richard Ames is a fictional agent of the F.B.I, who was with the president when he taken hostage by "The Sons of Liberty" in Metal Gear Solid 2. Little detail is given about his life, but it he that reveals to Raiden where the president is. Then, as Revolver Ocelot enters the room, knowing his true identity, he dies, in a fashion reminisicent of the FOXDIE virus. He is one of the few people in the game who know about the existence of Arsenal Gear, the giant battle tank, and The Patriots, the real control force behind the U.S. It is also said that he was once married to NEST Member Nastasha Romanenko.

Emma Emmerich is an AI programmer and the stepsister of Hal Emmerich. She is in charge of developing the AI that would control Metal Gear RAY.
Emma had a peaceful life as a child, until she and her stepfather were both nearly drowned in the family pool. (She survived, but not without injury; her stepfather died.) After this, she developed a fear of water, and became estranged from her stepbrother, Hal, blaming him for not saving her.
Emma would grow up to become a computer programmer of some note, and she was eventually recruited by The Patriots and set to work on programming a highly advanced AI called GW, which would be used by the Patriots to control the flow of information and the imparting of Memes between the generations. Despite working for them, Emma was largely unaware of the nature and motivation of her employers.
When the Big Shell is taken hostage, she is taken prisoner. In Metal Gear Solid 2, she is rescued by Raiden, who helps her overcome her phobia of water and escorts her to a workstation where she could disable GW. On the way to this workstation, while she was making a precarious crossing over a floating pipeline, she is attacked by Vamp, who is then dispatched by Raiden with a sniper rifle. Vamp's last act, however, is to stab Emma with his knife.
Snake carries Emma to an office, where she disables GW. There she is reunited with her brother. Tragically, despite the best efforts of Snake and Otacon, her bleeding won't stop, and Emma dies in her brother's arms. Her last words are "Please, call me Emma."

In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Fatman (who named himself after the Fat Man atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki) is a member of the Dead Cell team, an anti-terrorist organization that "went rogue" and turned into terrorists themselves. He is nearly or completely insane by the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 2, and has become obsessed with the idea of going down in history by destroying himself and a major structure in a cataclysmic explosion.
Fatman is bald and (presumably) quite obese, and tends to wear his thick bomb-blast suit and inline skates, along with particularly strong cologne, all the time. He takes pride in his delicate hands and fingers, and, because of his mental instability, is prone to grand, ridiculous pronouncements, in the style of a mad scientist. (A sample quote: "I die here...and start my legend!")
Fatman was the obsessive-compulsive son of a clockmaker, and this tendency and background give him an almost preternatural understanding of bombs. At the age of ten he built an atomic bomb (the Fat Man model) based on designs he had downloaded from the internet. After spending a time with Peter Stillman learning about bomb disposal techniques, he joined Dead Cell as a bomb disposal specialist. At some unspecified point before the events of Metal Gear Solid 2, he was also recruited by The Patriots as a sleeper agent.
When, Dead Cell went rogue, he went with them, and turned his knowledge of explosives to the task of rigging the Big Shell up with explosives. While this was partially part of Dead Cell's plan to hold the Big Shell and Metal Gear RAY hostage, the bombs were also part of The Patriot's plan to test Raiden's progress as part of the S3 Project. Fatman also has a personal interest in destroying the Big Shell; he wants to go down in history as one of the greatest bombers of all time.
In the course of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden disarms Fatman's explosives, then confronts and kills him. His last words were: "Laugh and Grow Fat!"

Fortune is a fictional character that appears in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
Born as Helena Dolph, she was the daughter of Scott Dolph, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and wife of Colonel Jackson, founder of Dead Cell. Helena led a largely uneventful life until the sudden death of her father during the Tanker incident in 2007. A few months later, her husband was convicted of mishandling federal funds and was found guilty; furthermore, Helena's mother committed suicide and Colonel Jackson himself died while serving out his sentence. Helena was unable to cope with the systematic loss of each of her close relatives and miscarried her unborn child of three months, essentially losing her entire family.
Helena was informed that the man responsible for her father's death was none other than Solid Snake, the mercenary allegedly responsible for sinking the tanker. In her search for vengeance, she joined the armed forces and found out that she is impervious to bullets. Because of this mysterious power, she was deemed Lady Luck by her comrades. She was quickly assigned to her husband's former unit, Dead Cell, and was welcomed with open arms by the team, especially Vamp, who was rumored to be her father's former bisexual lover. She was assigned the codename of Fortune and quickly gained leader status.
Fortune was one of the Dead Cell members who survived its liquidation, and six months later, on April 29, 2009, Dead Cell was involved in the Big Shell takeover. Dead Cell confronted alleged FOXHOUND member Raiden a few times, before confronting Snake personally within Arsenal Gear. Instead of killing Snake, Fortune took him prisoner and delivered him to Solidus Snake, leader of the Sons of Liberty (the terrorist group that seized the Big Shell). Shortly after, Revolver Ocelot revealed that the Big Shell takover was nothing more than a simulated version of the Shadow Moses incident and that Fortune's role in it was not coincidential. The deaths of her family members were planned by The Patriots and her invulnerability to bullets was simply the result of an electro-magnetic force field which surrounded her body; Ocelot confirmed the latter revelation by shooting Fortune in her chest. However, Ocelot missed her heart (as Fortune was born with dextrocardia) and the fatally-wounded Fortune stood up against him. When Ocelot launched missiles directed at her and the others with Metal Gear RAY, she managed to deflect them telepathically, implying that her powers and luck in the battlefield might not have been entirely due to the Patriots after all. Fortune died from her gunshot wound shortly afterwards.

In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Olga Gurlukovich is the daughter of Sergei Gurlukovich, and a member of his private army. She later joined the Patriots, and worked as their agent, playing an important role in the Big Shell incident of 2009.
Olga led her father's mercenaries when they captured the transport ship Discovery in his attempt to seize Metal Gear RAY in 2007. Sergei's intention at the time was to use RAY as a superweapon with which to re-establish Russia as a major world power. He boarded the ship with the help of Revolver Ocelot.
After the ship was secured, Sergei ordered her off the ship (out of concern for her unborn child), but she refused, and was subsequently confronted by Solid Snake. He subdued her, and continued on his mission of surveilling the Discovery, but later rescued her after Revolver Ocelot killed Sergei and critically damaged the ship.
After this, Olga took command of her father's forces and became a renegade, joining a branch of the Russian Mafia, which was in reality controlled by the Patriots. After she gave birth, her child was taken hostage, and used as a means by which to force Olga into serving the Patriots.
Two years later, the Gurlukovich forces, under Olga, and the Dead Cell group captured the Big Shell, and held President Johnson hostage. Olga was in fact working against her own men as an agent of the Patriots, her mission being to ensure the success of Raiden, a test subject of the S3 plan. So as to accomplish her mission, she was disguised as a ninja at times, so that she could intervene without her cover being blown. Her suit bore a striking similarity to that of Grey Fox, and she too was capable of using a katana to deflect bullets.
After Raiden was held aboard Arsenal Gear, Olga revealed herself to him, setting him free, and telling him of the S3 plan. Raiden, with the help of Solid Snake, escaped and was confronted by Solidus Snake. At this point, Olga revealed her true identity to all, including Solidus, determined to help Raiden, since his death would mean the murder of her child by the Patriots. After admitting her wrongs and imploring that Raiden survive for the sake of her innocent child, she was fatally shot in the head by Solidus.
Sergei Gurlukovich
Sergei Gurlukovich is a fictional character in the Metal Gear Solid 2 video game.
Sergei was a former Colonel in the Soviet/Russian army and a GRU agent. He was raised in Chelyabinsk-70 (later "Snezhinsk"). Whilst in the GRU he met Revolver Ocelot.
He later commanded a private mercenary army of over 1,000 mercenaries which was scheduled to deploy to Shadow Moses Island during the crisis in aid of the renegade FOXHOUND members. Due to the actions of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid this did not transpire as planned.
He died in 2007 aboard the USS Discovery which was secretly carrying Metal Gear RAY down the Hudson River. He had intended to steal Ray with Ocelot in his bid to revive "Mother Russia". However, Ocelot was not going to steal Ray, he was returning it to the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo (The Patriots). When confronted over this, he shot Sergei along with Marines Commander Scott Dolph and several others.
Sergei was survived by his daughter Olga Gurlukovich who commanded his private army during the Big Shell incident until her own death in 2009 by Solidus Snake. She in turn was survived by her child born during 2007 or 2008 who was taken at birth by the Patriots and whose current location is unknown.

Rosemary (or Rose for short) is a video game character from the Metal Gear video game series, who initially appeared in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, during the Plant Chapter of the game. She acts upon as Raiden's girlfriend and partial advisor, she is employed by the military as a data analyst, along with the Colonel.
Plot involvement
During the end of the game, after Solid Snake gives Raiden his speech, he states that Raiden "has things to do first, and people to talk to", he is then confronted by Rosemary, who asks that Raiden "sees her for who she is". Rosemary's only physical appearance is during this sequence. She primarily appeared via Codec.
Earlier in the game Rose confesses to Jack (Raiden), that she is an informant of The Patriots, and was ordered to act as a loved one in order to gain information, she stated that she tried to follow her orders, but failed to, and truly fell in love with him instead, ultimately leading to her physical bond with him as well as the future birth of their child, which was not part of her mission. This sparks the point of Rosemary's and Jack's deeper emotional problems with each other. As of now, Rosemary has only appeared in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. There is no certainty that she will appear in future titles.
