  • In Australian English, a spider is a frothy drink made from soda, flavoring, and ice cream. Beer Spiders are similar, subsituting beer for soft drink. The American name for the soda version of this beverage is a 'float,' sometimes also called an ice cream soda. The most popular variety is the root beer float.
  • A spider is also a cast-iron frying pan, so-named from the small legs with which they were originally made, on which they could be set among coals for cooking.
