Story
The ride presents disconnected scenes taken from the animated segments of Song of the South. It tells the story of the adventures of Brer Rabbit, a mischievous rabbit who leaves his home at the Briar Patch to look for his laughing place. Unfortunately for him, Brer Fox and Brer Bear, the antagonists of this story, are determined to catch him. Brer Rabbit outsmarts the two a few times, but in the end, they manage to catch him and take him to Brer Fox's cave at Chickapin Hill. Brer Rabbit outfoxes them them one final time, by tricking them into throwing him into his home, the Briar Patch. At that point, riders are sent down the big drop into the Briar Patch. At the end of the ride, a showboat and a lot of critters sing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah to celebrate Brer Rabbit's safe return.

Splash Mountain photos
During the final drop, a picture is taken of the riders in their log. This attraction has become very famous for a picture-taking ride. Other rides that do the same are Disneyland's Space Mountain, Disney's Animal Kingdom's Dinosaur and Epcot's Test Track.
Flashes
During the 52 1/2 foot plummet, a camera takes pictures of park guests, and this has been a source of controversy as female guests will often "flash" the camera, exposing their breasts. While this in itself should not be a problem as Disney staff members usually discard the images, some have leaked onto the Internet, suggesting that some Disney staff members save them for personal use. The resulting controversy resulted in the ride getting the nickname "Flash Mountain".

There are lots of Hidden Mickeys at the Magic Kingdom. here is a list of them (provided by Magical Mountain
- In the "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" scene, you'll recognize a famous shape lying on his back in the pink clouds to the right of the riverboat.
- As you are approaching the area where you actually enter the lines, on the ground there are a bunch of cracks and on the left a set of cracks make a hidden Mickey.
- In the architecture of Splash Mountain. If you look at it from directly in front of the big waterfall, the opening of the chute is in the shape of a Mickey head, rotated to the side 90 degrees.
- There is a hidden Mickey formed by three bobbers from fishing gear. They have been placed on a little desk next to/behind Brer' Frog where he is sitting on an alligator and fishing with his toe.
