Subprefectures of Japan

Some Japanese prefectures are divided into branch offices. Called 支庁 (shichō) in Japanese, this word is often translated into English as "subprefecture". Normally area of a subprefecture consists of a few to a dozen of cities, towns, and/or villages.

Prefectures containing subprefectures:

• There are 14 subprefectures in Hokkaido
• There is one subprefecture in Nagasaki Prefecture which is Tsushima subprefecture
