Superior has various meanings.

• In a hierarchical structure of any kind, a superior is placed above a subordinate and is closer to the apex. See superior (hierarchy).
• Similarly, a person who is a "superior" has the authority to command (an)other(s), especially in a hierarchy such as the (para)military (as in "a superior officer") or holds the highest position -with varying authority- in a religious order (superior general) or part of it, see provincial superior, or just a single monastery.
• The adjective "Superior" (also used substantivated) indicates that a person, group of people or other some thing is qualitatively better or more desirable than something else, but such a trait may be assigned or perceived without reference to absolute or objective criteria.

• Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes between the United States of America and Canada. By water volume and maximum depth (but not surface area), Lake Superior is the largest body of fresh water in the world.
