History
Brothers Addison and Randolph Clark founded the AddRan Male and Female Academy in 1873 after returning from service in the Civil War. The first coeducational learning institution college in the Southwest (a remarkably progressive step for a time when most schools were for either men or women exclusively), the Academy's first class included thirteen enrolled students.
The school was established in Thorp Springs, Texas, but financial difficulties resulted in a move to Waco from 1895 to 1910. The academy was renamed Texas Christian University in 1902. To honor the founding brothers, one of its schools is named the AddRan College of Humanties and Social Sciences.
After a fire at the Waco campus in 1911, the University relocated to its current home at Fort Worth, where it still thrives today.

Athletics
TCU competes in NCAA sports as a member of the Mountain West Conference in Division I (I-A in football). TCU won the National Championship in football in both 1935 and 1938, and was a long time member of the former Southwest Conference (which also included Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, SMU, Houston, Arkansas, and Rice) until that conference was disbanded after the 1995 season with the formation of the Big 12 Conference. TCU then moved to the Western Athletic Conference, shifted to Conference USA in 2001, and moved again in 2005 to the Mountain West Conference. The school's most famous athletes were football players Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien for whom the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is named; among currently-active athletes, the best-known TCU product is another NFL star, LaDainian Tomlinson, who is the starting running back for the San Diego Chargers and in 2004 signed a 6 year, $60 million contract making him the highest paid running back in NFL history.
