The Badger Herald

From Freepedia

The Badger Herald is an independent, daily student newspaper that serves the University of Wisconsin-Madison community. The paper is published Monday through Friday during the academic year. It is available at newstands across campus and is also published on the web. The print circulation is 16,000.

The Badger Herald was founded in 1969 by a group of four students seeking a conservative alternative to the University of Wisconsin's official student newspaper, The Daily Cardinal, which editorialized against the Vietnam War and had close ties to leaders of the campus protest movement. Today, UW-Madison is the only major college campus in the country with two student-run newspapers.

From its first issue the paper was respected for its professional graphic design and accurate reporting even while facing a hostile reception by the larger student community. Founding editor Pat Korten received financial support for the new paper from nationally known conservative writer William F. Buckley. One of Korten's most memorable quotes was that Richard Nixon would be remembered as one of the greatest American presidents in history. Korten went on to serve as the spokesman of the U.S. Department of Justice during the Reagan Administration. Today, The Badger Herald is still seen as the more conservative of the two papers on campus.

In 2001 The Badger Herald published a controversial advertisement by conservative author David Horowitz. Weathering several protests and disruptions in circulation, the Herald refused to apologize for publishing the advertisement. After a flurry of national news coverage, the paper's status as a genuinely independent student newspaper stood firm.
