The European Library

From Freepedia

The European Library is a library portal for searching the databases and open public access catalogues as well as for accessing the digital content of European national libraries. At the same time it's a consortium of those national libraries to develop and maintain this service.

The portal was created in cooperation of 9 national libraries and CENL (Conference of European National Librarians) under TEL (The European Library: Gateway to Europe's Knowledge) project. The project lasted from 2001 to 2003 and was funded by the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission.

TheEuropeanLibrary.org service was launched on 17 March 2005. At the present time it provides data from the national libraries of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Slovenia. In the timeframe of TEL-ME-MOR (The European Library: Modular Extensions for Mediating Online Resources) project that lasts from 2005 to 2007, the national libraries of 10 New Member States of the European Union will also join the service. In the future The European Library should become the central gateway to all electronic resources of 44 European national libraries.

The service is in process of being tested and developed. From March till June 2005 The European Library was available to Internet Explorer 6.0 users only. Since June 2005 there is also a Mozilla-compatible interface.

First national libraries from the New Member States of the European Union should join the consortium in January 2006.
