From Freepedia
The Preuss School is a college-preparatory charter school established on the University of California, San Diego campus in 1999. The school was named in recognition of a gift from the Preuss Family Foundation, and is chartered under the San Diego Unified School District.
The mission of the Preuss School is to provide an intensive college preparatory curriculum to low-income students and to improve educational practices in grades 6 – 12. The school prepares students to enter the University of California and other selective institutions of higher education. The school opened with 150 students in grades 6 – 8, and as of 2004 was fully enrolled with 767 students in grades 6 – 12. In 2004, Preuss student demographics were: 59.5% Hispanic, 21.7% Asian, 12.9% African American, and 6% White.
Preuss students come from the greater San Diego area and are selected through a process of application and lottery. To be eligible, a student must be from a low-income family (using Federal school-lunch criteria), must have no parent or guardian who has graduated from a 4-year college or university, and must have the academic potential and motivation to benefit from an intensive college preparatory program.
Preuss School is housed in a $14 million dollar facility on the UCSD campus. One hundred percent of the design and construction funds came from community donors.
