The Quarry

From Freepedia

The Quarry is the name of the main park in the Shropshire county town of Shrewsbury, England. It is called "the Quarry" park as there used to be a stone quarry there, used in the Middle Ages. It was a small quarry and now has been transformed into a flower garden with ponds and fountains, called "The Dingle" (dingle is a Shropshire word used for an area of beauty or gardens). Also in the Quarry park is a bandstand and nearby are the Shrewsbury town swimming baths. The River Severn runs through the parkland, which holds various festivals through the year including the Shrewsbury Flower Show and the Shrewsbury Regatta. The headquarters of the Shropshire Horticultural Society are also located in the park.

The avenue that runs along the River Severn is called "Victoria Avenue" and the avenue that runs downhill from the town centre to the Victoria Avenue is "Gloucester Avenue". Both are traffic free at all times.

Opposite the Quarry, on the other side of the River Severn, is Shrewsbury School and the Pengwern Boat Club.
