The Skeptics Society

From Freepedia

The Skeptics Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting scientific skepticism and resisting the spread of pseudoscience, superstition, and irrational beliefs. The group was founded in 1992 by Michael Shermer, who as of 2005 remains one of the chief officers and publisher of the society's periodical, Skeptic magazine.

Like CSICOP and the James Randi Educational Foundation, the Skeptics Society investigates extraordinary claims. Unlike CSICOP, it does not limit itself to potentially pseudoscientific claims, but also investigates such controversies as Holocaust revisionism and conspiracy theories. The group sponsors a lecture series at Caltech, sells books about science and skepticism, hosts an annual awards ceremony and an annual scientific conference, holds social events, provides the media with information on controversial claims from a skeptical viewpoint, and maintains a website.

The Skeptics Society was originally founded as a Los Angeles-area skeptical group to replace the defunct Southern California Skeptics. After the success of its magazine, introduced in Spring 1992, it became a national, then international, organization.
