Tigrigna (ትግርኛ, nowadays usually spelled Tigrinya in English, as opposed to the older Italian spelling) is a Semitic language spoken in Eritrea, where it is one of the main working languages (Eritrea does not have official languages), and in parts of Ethiopia and Israel. It is written in the Ge'ez (also called Ethiopic) script.
In northern Ethiopia, the speakers of this language are known as Tigrawot (plural); the singular forms are Tigraway for male and Tigraweiti for female speakers. Classification of Tigrigna speakers in Eritrea, however, are split along sectarian lines, with Christians being identified as Tigrigna and Muslims as Jebertis.
