In the Games

Pokedex Definitions

Ruby: "Torchic sticks with its Trainer, following behind with unsteady steps. This Pokémon breathes fire over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, including fireballs that leave the foe scorched black."

Sapphire: "TORCHIC has a place inside its body where it keeps its flame. Give it a hug - it will be glowing with warmth. This POKéMON is covered all over by a fluffy coat of down."

Emerald: "If attacked, it strikes back by spitting balls of fire it forms in its stomach. A TORCHIC dislikes darkness because it can’t see its surroundings."

Picking this Pokémon as a starter is categorized as choosing a "Medium-Hard" difficulty level because the first gym leader uses pokémon whose type is very resistant to Torchic's fiery moves. However, Torchic is the only Fire-type Pokémon available between Littleroot Town (where trainers receive it) and Fiery Path. Plus, the third gym leader (which is before Fiery Path) uses some steel-type Pokémon which are easily beaten by fire-type attacks.

This Pokémon can learn some moves bird pokémon learn, like peck. However, as it evolves into a Fighting-type Pokémon it doesn't learn any more similar attacks.

In the Anime

In the Pokémon anime, May chose Torchic as her starter because she considered it to be cute. Her young Torchic is very playful and fun, even though it's not her strongest battle Pokémon.

It later evolves into Combusken to defend the group against a mob of angry Breloom

In the Manga

A fiesty girl Torchic is the main character of Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪, having just moved to a new town (the setting of Magical Pokémon Journey) with her trainer Haruka. There she meets Pikachu and Clefairy, as well as the brothers Poochyena (who she instantly hates) and Mightyena (who she falls immediately in love with). This Torchic has an Adamant Nature.

Sapphire's starter Pokémon in Pokémon Adventures is a Torchic named Chamo that she received from her father, Professor Birch. Chamo evolved into Combusken during Sapphire's battle with Brawly and into Blaziken while she was training for her battle with Winona.
