Most of the economic growth of the 1980's and beyond with the notable exception of Deng's initial land reforms have been concentrated in the coastal cities such as Shanghai and Canton. Rural entrepenurial ventures known as Township and village enterprises have accounted for most of the recent rural economic growth.
Generally, the local populace is mobilized into a buisness or industry through the state. This system has been efficant in China and is truly unique.
