A traction powerstation is a power station, which produces only traction current. Pure traction power stations are rare. There was such a power station in Muldenstein (former Eastern Germany). There are much more power stations, which have generators for three phase AC current and for traction current.

Hydroelectric power stations, conventional thermal power stations and nuclear power stations are used as traction power stations. Wind and solar power stations for the production of traction current are not built so far.

Power stations for traction current (examples)

  • Nuclear power station Neckarwestheim (GKN Block 1)
  • Walchenseekraftwerk
  • Pump storage power station Langenprozelten
  • Großkraftwerk Mannheim
