Trading post

From Freepedia

A trading post is a place where trading of goods takes place. The preferred travel route to a trading post, or between trading posts, is known as a trade route.

Trading posts were very common in the early settlements of Canada and the United States for the trade of such things as fur. The furs were hung on posts in the open air to dry, thus the name. Many trading posts later had small general stores, like the one shown at right. Originally located in what was often remote wilderness, some of them later became towns and even cities.
