Type genus

From Freepedia

In zoological nomenclature, a type genus is "The nominal genus that is the name-bearing type of a nominal family-group taxon."

In botanical nomenclature, the phrase "type genus" is used, unofficially, as a term of convenience for the genus that includes the type of a higher ranking taxon. The name of this higher ranking taxon will be based on the name of this 'type' genus (except in the case of a descriptive name). In the ICBN the phrase "type genus" has no status.
