Underwater swimming
From Freepedia
For swimming underwater with swimfins and/or breathing apparatus, see scuba diving or diving activities.'At the second modern Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, probably the most unusual sport was underwater swimming.
Points were awarded as follows:
- Two points for every metre swum under water
- One point for every second the swimmer stayed below the surface
The competition was held over a maximum of 60 m.
The winner was Charles DeVandeville (France), who swam 60 meters in a time of 1 minute and 8.4 seconds (score: 188.4 pts). In second and third places were André Six (France) and Peter Lykkeberg (Denmark).
This was the first and only time underwater swimming was held at the Olympic Games: The sport was not featured at subsequent games because of lack of spectator appeal.
