The University of Wisconsin System is the state university system in Wisconsin, composed of fifteen institutions with twenty-six campuses.

There are two research universities which grant doctoral degrees:

• UW–Madison, the flagship campus (often referred to simply as the "University of Wisconsin" or "UW")
• UW–Milwaukee

There are eleven comprehensive universities which grant baccalaureate and master's degrees:

• UW–Eau Claire
• UW–Green Bay
• UW–La Crosse
• UW–Oshkosh
• UW–Parkside
• UW–Platteville
• UW–River Falls
• UW–Stevens Point
• UW–Stout
• UW–Superior
• UW–Whitewater

There is one institution, the (UW Colleges), which grants associate degrees on thirteen local campuses:

• UW–Baraboo/Sauk County
• University of Wisconsin-Barron County
• UW–Fond du Lac
• UW–Fox Valley
• UW–Manitowoc
• UW–Marathon County
• UW–Marinette
• UW–Marshfield/Wood County
• UW–Richland
• UW–Rock County
• UW–Sheboygan
• UW–Washington County
• UW–Waukesha

The UW Colleges also grants associate degrees through its online program.

There is also the UW Extension, which operates extension courses statewide through offices in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.

The UW System was founded in 1971 with the merger of the University of Wisconsin, which included the Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Parkside campuses, the Centers and the Extension, and the Wisconsin State Universities, which included the other nine campuses. It serves approximately 160,000 students, ranking second in the nation behind California.

The University of Wisconsin (or simply UW) alone is commonly used to refer to the Madison campus, especially with regard to sports.
