Variation
From Freepedia
Variation means an instance of change or the rate or magnitude of change. In various fields it may refer to:
- Astronomical variation/Variation (astronomy) - any perturbation of the mean motion or orbit of a planet or satellite; especially a perturbation of the earth's moon.
- Biodiversity
- Direct variation
- Genetic variation/Variation (genetics) - a mutation, an organism that has characteristics resulting from chromosomal alteration
- Indirect variation.
- Magnetic variation - the difference, east or west, between magnetic north and true north, measured as an angle. Magnetic variation varies in different geographic locations
- Variation (ballet) - pas seul: a solo dance or dance figure
- Variation (game) - the process whereby the community of players, rather than any officiating authority, adapts the rules for informal play.
- Variation (music) - a formal technique where material is altered during repetition; reiteration with changes.
Variation can also be a misnomer of variance, term used in statistics: a measure of the spread of the variable. It is the quantifiable amount of change or difference from expected results, in the form of the deviation from a central value. When present in a normal distribution it is measured using standard deviation as the sum of the squared deviations from the mean.
