Gym leader

In Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Gold, Silver, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, Vermilion City is home to the electric type-using gym leader Lt. Surge. To get to this point, the player must retrieve the Hidden Machine (HM) Cut.

S.S Anne

The S.S. Anne makes its presence felt here in the Red, Blue/Green, FireRed and LeafGreen versions. The S.S. Aqua travels to this city from Olivine City in Johto. In the Fire Red and Leaf Green versions, the Seagallop ships also depart from this port towards the Sevii Islands. The route which the ship takes is sometimes known as the Kanto-Johto Sea Route. East of the city is the Diglett's Cave.

In Red and Blue, as well as LeafGreen and FireRed, the player must retrieve the important HM, Cut, by receiving the S.S Anne pass from Pokémaniac Bill, board the S.S. Anne, and rub the captain's back, who has sea-sickness. He then gives you the HM. On your way, you encounter your rival. On the ship, there are a number of trainers who seek battle inside the cabins. The first type of Poké Ball, Great ball, can also be found in the kitchen area in one of the bins in Red and Blue. In LeafGreen and FireRed, you simply find berries in the bins.

In the anime

Vermilion city makes an appearance in episode #14, Electric Shock Showdown, in which Ash Ketchum fights against Lt. Surge. Ash fails the first time, but wins the second time. The following episode, Battle Aboard The S.S. Anne, Ash, Misty, and Brock board the S.S Anne.

Additional information

This city is also home of the Pokémon fan club, where the chairman gives you a Bike voucher in Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, he simply gives you a rare candy. Also noted is that in FireRed and LeafGreen, a girl inside the Pokémon centre gives you a VS. Seeker. Vermilion also leads to Route 11, where there is a Snorlax in the way of the road.
