Villa de Leyva

Villa de Leyva is a colonial town 40 kms west of Tunja and a population of about 4,000 people. It is one of the finest villages of Colombia, declared National Monument to preserve its architecture. I was founded in 1572 by Hernán Suarez de Villalobos after the first president of the New Kingdom of Granada, Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva.
It is located in a high valley at 2,144 mts of altitude where fossils from the Mesozoic and the Cretaceous abound.
