History

The club was founded in 1923 and played in a regional league. It oscillated between the Third Division and the Regional division, then between the Second Division and Third, until finally, in 1998, it arrived in the First Division. After one year in the First Division the club was relegated to the Second Division, but only for one season. Since the 2000/2001 Season the team has remained in First Division. In its short time in the First Division, Villarreal has already won the UEFA Intertoto Cup twice – in 2003 and 2004.

Villarreal achieved something of a proud moment when they played the semi-final of the UEFA Cup for 2003/2004, however they lost to their more illustrious neighbour, Valencia CF, who went on to win the Cup. The club has been a regular fixture in the Primera Liga for many years. The team has a number of South American players including Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán, Argentine stars Juan Pablo Sorín and Juan Román Riquelme, and Bolivian Peña, and only a few famous Spanish players such as former Spain striker José Mari.

Villarreal's home uniform is yellow shirt, blue shorts and blue socks. The team is nicknamed the Submarino amarillo (the yellow submarine) because of their yellow shirts. The mascot (named Groguet) is a figure with a submarine head.
