Wikijunior
From Freepedia
Wikijunior is the working title for a set of books targeted to children aged 8–11 being developed at the Wikimedia project Wikibooks. This effort will consist of both a website and magazine. The website is currently in development in English, Japanese and Danish, but expected to be in at least a dozen languages. Wikijunior is funded by a grant from the Beck Foundation.
The project issues three series of print magazines:
- The Natural World
- Biology/Geography series. First issue: Big Cats, likely to be followed with Sharks or Dinosaurs.
- Our World of People
- Culture/History/Life/Society series. First issue: South America.
- A World of Discovery and Innovation
- Mathematics/Science/Technology series. First issue: Solar System
Project history
The Beck Foundation approached Wikimedia to create a set of wiki books for youth, offering a major startup grant for the effort. The concept was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees on October 16, 2004. Wikijunior was initated October 24 on Wikimedia's Meta site by Wikipedia user Danny.
Development of the actual content began November 7, 2004, a month after the effort was first mentioned on Wikibooks.
Future goals
It is presumed the online component of Wikijunior will be shown on a locked website, edited and approved on Wikibooks before becoming "live". This is currently being discussed.
