Wikipedia:Identity verification

From Freepedia

There are a number of ways to verify your identity to the Wikipedia community should it be necessary for something.

The easiest way to do this is to take any one of the Administrators of Wikipedia (Who can be found at Wikipedia:List of administrators and to either e-mail them through the "E-mail this user" link on their userpage, or to leave a note on their talk page saying that you'd like to have your identity verified. Alternatively, if you and the person who has requested that you verify your identity can agree on some other third party to conduct the verification, that would work fine.

Typically, the identification procedure would work like this: You would send an e-mail from an e-mail address that would verify your identity. If you are trying to verify a celebrity identity or that you are the owner of a particular webpage, you could do this by having an e-mail sent from any e-mail address in your domain name. (For instance, should Wil Wheaton post on Wikipedia, he could e-mail from any wilwheaton.net e-mail address to verify). If you are trying to prove a professional or university affiliation, you could use an e-mail address from the appropriate domain - harvard.edu, sprint.com, etc.

Whomever you e-mail would then reply to you with a simple request like "Please reply to this e-mail with the text 'yes, we have no bananas' to verify that you are in fact User:Wil Wheaton on Wikipedia." If the requested reply is received, this would serve to verify the user's identity.

In cases where you do not want to share your e-mail address with a random person, you might contact a member of the Wikimedia Board and ask them to conduct the verification.
