Copyvio for new users

Images

I've noticed that a lot of new users mistakenly upload copyvios, especially pictures, and often without noting the source. This is for new users who upload copyrighted pics. I welcome edits to it. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 22:32, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hello, and [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|welcome]] to Wikipedia! We're glad to have you here. Just wanted to let you know—the image you just uploaded appears to be from a [[copyright]]ed source. Please add source information by going to the image page (type Image:NAMEOFIMAGE in the text box) and editing it to add source information. If your image is in the [[public domain]], or licensed under the [[GFDL]], then it's OK to use; if not, you have to claim [[fair use]], which may or may not stand up. See [[Wikipedia:Copyrights]] for details. Best wishes, and ask at [[Wikipedia:Help desk]] if you have any questions. Yours, ~~~

Text

Based on Meelar's boilerplate welcome, I created this one, which is appropriate for users who copy-and-paste off other sites. Replace the $VARIABLES with whatever's appropriate. (Edits, feedback, etc. please.) Twinxor

Hello, and [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|welcome]] to Wikipedia! We're glad to have you here. Unfortunately, we can't keep the articles you created on $PAGE1 and $PAGE2, because they violate another person's copyright. We aren't legally allowed to directly take other people's work; however, it is fine to ''research'' topics on other sites. See [[Wikipedia:Copyrights]] for details.

But don't get discouraged – try writing your own $SUBJECT articles! For help on writing articles, you can check out the [[Wikipedia:FAQ|FAQs]], especially on [[Wikipedia:Editing FAQ|contributing]] and [[Wikipedia:Editing FAQ|editing]]. There's a lot to know, but one of the [[Wikipedia:Why Wikipedia is so great|cool things about Wikipedia]] is that others will edit ''your'' contributions to make them better!

Also, consider [[Wikipedia:Why create an account?|getting a user account]], which will allow you to take credit for your work and make communcation easier. Best wishes, and if you have any questions, ask on [[Wikipedia:Help desk]] or just leave a note on [[User_talk:$USER|my talk page]]. Yours, ~~~

Request for introduction included

There is a page at Wikipedia:New user log where new users can introduce themselves to the community. This should make it easier for us to find new users and help them get started. You might want to update your greeting to include a request that the new user introduce themselves at the new user log.

Hello Insert Name Here, [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|welcome]] to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to [[Wikipedia:Wikipedians|stay]]. Drop us a note at [[Wikipedia:New user log]] so we can meet you and help you get started. If you need editing help, visit [[Wikipedia:How to edit a page]]. For format questions, visit our [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style|manual of style]]. If you have any other questions about the project then check out [[Wikipedia:Help]] or add a question to the [[wikipedia:Village pump|Village pump]]. ~~~~

Mav-style

Here is a Standard Greeting you can use to greet new users (note: I got this from Maveric149):

Hello there Insert Name Here, [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|welcome]] to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to [[Wikipedia:Wikipedians|stay]]. If you ever need editing help visit [[Wikipedia:How does one edit a page]] or how to format them visit our [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style|manual of style]]. Experiment at [[Wikipedia:Sandbox]]. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit [[Wikipedia:Naming conventions]]. If you have any other questions about the project then check out [[Wikipedia:Help]] or add a question to the [[wikipedia:Village pump|Village pump]]. ~~~~

Newcomers' village pump

This is my version of the welcome message. It sends the new user to the Newcomers' village pump instead of the normal village pump. Note that the link to the talk page should be replaced with a link to your talkpage. Alex S 19:22, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hello INSERT NAME HERE, [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|welcome]] to [[Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not|Wikipedia]]! I hope you like the place and decide to [[Wikipedia:Wikipedians|join the community]]. Drop us a note at [[Wikipedia:New user log]] so we can meet you and help you get started. Suggest creating an account

Here is a Standard Greeting that you can use for people who have not yet become users but are making good edits to the Wikipedia. It was based, of course, on the above.

Hello there! [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers|Welcome]] to Wikipedia! We've noticed that you've been making some great additions to the Wikipedia and we ''really'' appreciate it. Why not [[Special:Userlogin|create an account]] and stay awhile? The Wikipedia can use as many quality members as possible. If you ever need editing help visit [[Wikipedia:How does one edit a page]] and experiment at [[Wikipedia:Sandbox]]. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit [[Wikipedia:Naming conventions]]. If you have any other questions about the project then check out [[Wikipedia:Help]] or add a question to the [[wikipedia:Village pump|Village pump]]. Hope to see you around for a long time to come! ~~~~

Ilyanep has his own

Here it is, to paste it on a talk page...just use {{subst:User:Ilyanep/Wel}} ~~~~. Ignore the part that says "Hi, standard user greeting" because the code says "Hi, {{PAGENAME}}", and so it will be replaced with the user's name.

User:Ilyanep/Wel

Tim avoids being cryptic

This is my user greeting, I think the absence of obscurely wikilinked words in running text makes it less confusing. Replace the name and add personalised text after the first sentence or as extra bullet points. -- Tim Starling 01:10 15 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hello new user and welcome to Wikipedia. A few tips for you:

*Peruse [[Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers]] and associated pages
*Sign talk page entries with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, which is automatically converted to a name and date
*Ask questions on [[Wikipedia:Village pump]]
*Have fun.

Jrdioko's Welcome Messages

I've created two boilerplate messages so that I can quickly add the welcome text to the talk pages of new users. I use two messages: one for registered users, and one for anonymous users. Also, I use the subst: method rather than the msg: method to insert the welcomes so that the user can easily see what commands were used to create the message by editing their talk page.

Ooh, I like yours. I'm going to use it. Thanks! —RadRafe | t 21:03, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Neutrality's version

To use this message, copy the content to your own user subpage, like User:Neutrality/Welcome. Save your edit. To add the template to a talk page, put {{User:Neutrality/Welcome}}. User:Neutrality/Welcome

Hi User, and welcome to Wikipedia.

Thankyou for finding the time to sign up and contribute to our little project. If you're in doubt about anything, you might want to check out some of these pages:

It's also a good idea to sign the new user log and add a little about yourself.

When contributing to a talk page, you can sign your name by typing four tildes after your comments, like this: ~~~~. Some people do not pay attention to unsigned comments. An important note: Please do not add this signature to encyclopedia articles you may edit, even if you have created them. Wikipedia articles are owned by the community, not by any one person.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me at my talk page, or at the Help desk or Village Pump.

But above all, make sure you be bold when contributing, and have fun!

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia, the greatest encyclopedia on Earth! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I noticed you are known only as an IP address; that means you are not signed up. When you are you will get a username like mine. (See Wikipedia:Why create an account?). It only takes a username and password to sign up, no information needed (go to Special:Userlogin to sign up). Once you are signed up, you will have a recognizable name that others can use in identifying and corresponding with you. In addition, you might want to add yourself to the new user log.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

{{anon}}

Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia! You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and gives you many benefits, including:

  • The use of a username of your choice
  • The ability to view all your contributions via a "My contributions" link
  • Your own user page
  • Your own talk page which, if you choose, also allows users to send you messages without knowing your e-mail address
  • The use of your own personal watchlist to which you can add articles that interest you
  • The ability to rename pages
  • The ability to upload images
  • The ability to customize the appearance and behavior of the website
  • The eligibility to become an administrator
  • The right to be heard in votes and elections
  • Your IP address will no longer be visible to other users.

We hope that you choose to become a Wikipedian and create an account. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have on my talk page. We hope you enjoy your time here on Wikipedia as a Wikipedian!

This is a list of suggested tips that can be added to any of the above messages.

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
