Wilson's magnolia, Magnolia wilsonii, is native to the provinences of Szechwan and Yunnan in China. It is a large spreading shrub or small tree (to 26ft/8 m) of the forest understory at altitudes of 6,200 to 10,800 ft (1,900-3,300 m). The elliptic/lanceolate leaves have brown pubescence on the underside and are 5-10in/3-5.5 cm long. The drooping, pure-white flowers with crimson centers are up to 10cm/4in in diameter on vigorous plants. Due to their drooping characteristic, flowers are best viewed from the underside.
This species is threatened by habitat destruction and collection for medicinal use (see Houpu magnolia), and regeneration is poor.
This magnolia is quite rare in cultivation and needs a protected planting location with afternoon shade.
