Winmalee, New South Wales
From Freepedia
Winmalee (33°40′ S 150°36′ E) is a town in the lower Blue Mountains, Australia.
This interesting settlement is situated adjacent to the settlement of Springwood, within the Blue Mountains National Park World Heritage Site, an area surrounded by rugged and beautiful bushland interspersed by rugged cliff lines, and deep gorges. Often missed by tourists as it does not lie adjacent to the main highway through the mountains, it could be said to be a hidden gem of the Blue Mountains.
It was an ancient settlement of the Daruk Indigenous Australian tribe, and latest figures place the date of this settlement up to 50,000 years ago (Stocton).
Summerhayes Park is used for many of the community's sporting activities. Adjacent to the Park is typical Australian bush country, contaning a wealth of flora and fauna including rare & threatened plant communities. Outside the built-up part of Winmalee are many interesting bushwalks for all levels of fitness.
The township contains many services including primary and high schools, a volunteer bushfire brigade and the existing shopping centre of Whitecross which is being revitalised.
The cultural framework is generally still an Anglo-Saxon bastion with minor ethnic diversity however this is changing. The educational demography of the population is quite surprising with a high proportion of residents holding degrees in study in comparison with the broader Sydney basin.
Close to Winmalee, are situated the small but growing communities of Hawkesbury Heights and Yellow Rock. Both have lookouts with magnificent views of the Hawkesbury Plain and Nepean River-(also known as the Hawkesbury River north of Penrith).
