Wood grain

From Freepedia

Wood grain describes the alignment, texture and appearance of the wood fibres. This is often important in its effect on woodworking techniques (e.g. against the grain).

Three generally recognized types of grain are:

  • flat-sawn or plain sawn,
  • quarter-sawn or rift-sawn or straight-grained, and
  • end grain.

As well, grain could refer to the "figure" of wood, including:

  • Bird's eye
  • Flame, fiddleback, curly, tiger or quilt figure
  • Ray fleck
  • Roe grain
