World Scrabble Championship
From Freepedia
The World Scrabble Championship is the highest prize in competitive English-language Scrabble. It has been held every second year since 1991.
Sponsorship has alternated between Mattel and Hasbro, as these companies are the owners of the game in the UK and the United States respectively. However, Hasbro declined to sponsor WSC 2005, and instead Mattel will sponsor it again.
The number of players invited to the tournament has risen steadily over time, from 48 in 1991 to 90 in 2003. A set number of places is allocated to each competing country and it is then up to individual countries to decide which of their players will represent them. This is typically done by a nationwide rating system or a national championship.
As of 2005, no player has ever won the WSC more than once. Joel Wapnick has reached the final on three occasions, winning in 1999, but was defeated in 1993 and 2001. No other player has reached so many finals, although Mark Nyman, Brian Cappelletto and Joel Sherman have each reached two and won one.
The dictionary used is SOWPODS, as this is the most widely-used English language lexicon.
